Who is behind TerrAzoia?
TerrAzoia was started by me, Sofia, with a love for nature, the soil, food and healthy lifestyle.
From my teenage years, I was always interested in health, exercise and general wellness. Long story short, after traveling the world as a daughter of diplomats, then living in deep America as an adult, what was always constant in my life was my passion for cooking and healthy lifestyle. Adding to that repertoire, I also became a recipe tester and developer for a variety of websites and cookbooks about 15 years ago.
Yet, somehow I allowed life to take over and I left that passion for wellness and exercise. It was when I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer that without even trying, the passion came back. Some refer to such a journey as a personal wake-up call, and I truly believe such. When I started my journey through cancer, I knew my call was to help others attain their personal health and wellness goals.
Just prior to being diagnosed, I decided to become certified in plant-based nutrition through eCornell and T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. This revolutionary program equipped me with the understanding and importance of diet and nutrition in one’s health and wellness. The teachings were comprised from over 25 experts (MDs, PhDs, RDs, RNs), including world-renown experts such as Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr., from the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Miachal Greger, from NutritionFacts.org and so on.
In 2016, I decided to compliment my educational training with a Certificate in Health Coaching from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition's cutting-edge Health Coach Training Program. During this training, I studied over 100 dietary theories, practical lifestyle management techniques, and innovative coaching methods with some of the world’s top health and wellness experts. Some of the teachers and mentors included Dr. Andrew Weil, Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine; Dr. Deepak Chopra, leader in the field of mind-body medicine; Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center; Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of Nutrition at Harvard University; Geneen Roth, bestselling author and expert on emotional eating; amongst many other leading researchers and nutrition authorities. Today I am certified by the International Association for Health Coaches.
These two education components equipped me with an extensive knowledge in holistic nutrition, health coaching, and preventive health and wellness. With these skills and knowledge at hand, I help each of you on a personal level to make the lifestyle changes needed to produce lasting results for your overall health and life balance. Being a cancer survivor and thriver, I still focus on volunteering and helping others that are entering this journey. I know first hand what they are going through and can help them deal with both emotional and physical matters.
My areas of expertise include teachings on how to food shop by choosing better choice and in season ingredients, recipe and meal planning, with a focus on whole foods, smoothies, juices, raw, vegetarian/vegan and gluten-free lifestyles, though I will also work with carnivores as well as pescatarians.
In 2017, I finally returned to Portugal and inherited part of my parents'valley. We have been slowly working the organic farm. Last year I teamed up with an amazing and powerful lady, Rita Oliveira, who shares similar beliefs and a passion for farming and cooking. We are careful creating an amazing community of individuals that live at Casa das Hortas.
Casa do Pico focuses mostly on events, from community Kirtan twice a week, to yoga, meditation and other wellness programs or workshops.
TerrAzoia is a hub for the community as well as travelers. One can come volunteer at the farm, or be part one of our wellness classes and workshops, visit the farm and enjoy a farm to table experience.
Our guests leave with a sense of peacefulness, learn about healthy lifestyle, empowered to start growing their own produce, or at the very least some herbs if living in a small apartment, and the recipes we worked on.
